Roma star Paulo Dybala is reportedly close to penning a new contract at the Stadio Olimpico. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, La Joya is ready to take a substantial pay cut to secure a new two-year deal in Italy’s capital.

Dybala’s exit looked like a foregone conclusion until recently. With his contract running out in June, a summer exit seemed inevitable. However, the Argentine forward is now one step away from committing his future to Roma, only days before he was supposed to become a free agent.

Despite another injury-plagued season, Dybala remains one of the club’s standout performers. Indeed, he defied recurring fitness problems to tally three goals and eight assists across 27 appearances in all competitions. In doing so, he helped Roma secure their first top-four finish in Serie A since the 2017/18 season.

Our Take on Roma & Paulo Dybala

Roma’s decision to hand Dybala a new deal stems from the 32-year-old’s popularity. For context, the Argentine forward’s shirts are still the best sellers. However, Roma had to convince their talisman, who joined the club from Juventus in 2022, to take a massive pay cut.

As such, Dybala has agreed to cut his wages from €8 million per season to just €2.5m plus bonuses. Therefore, he is expected to sign a new two-year contract in the coming days. Despite his pending renewal, Roma are likely to sign at least one new forward this summer.

Fiorentina’s Moise Kean and Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca have been on Gian Piero Gasperini’s shortlist for months. Yet, La Dea reportedly won’t entertain offers for their striker, with incoming manager Maurizio Sarri keen to build his side around the former Sassuolo ace.
