Reports in Italy claim that Italy national team head coach Luciano Spalletti has reached a decision to resign from his position in charge of the Nazionale in the aftermath of a disastrous 3-0 loss to Norway in World Cup qualifying on Friday.

Italy were beaten 3-0 by Norway after first-half goals from Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa and Erling Haaland, which has already complicated the qualification process for the 2026 World Cup.

While they have played fewer games than any other team in the qualification group, Italy are already nine points off top spot in Group I, which is needed to claim direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup.

There is a meeting between Spalletti and FIGC President Gabriele Gravina scheduled for after the upcoming World Cup qualifier between Italy and Moldova on Monday in order to take stock of the situation.

The CT is also due to speak to the media ahead on Sunday ahead of the next World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Monday.

However, according to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio and others, Spalletti is currently leaning towards a decision to resign from his position as CT of the Italy national team.

Sky Sport Italia claim that a decision has already been reached and that an announcement could be imminent.

Sunday’s reports claim that former Milan and Fiorentina head coach Stefano Pioli is the current favourite to replace Spalletti if he does decide to leave, more so than Claudio Ranieri, who has recently stepped into a new role with Roma.
