Benfica midfielder Richard Ríos has posted a heartfelt message to Colombian supporters following the World Cup, keeping any controversy at arm’s length. He focused on gratitude rather than the noise around him.
According to Glorioso 1904, the post came amid reports of a possible disagreement with the ex-Porto player James Rodríguez, with claims of flashpoints during matches and suggestions the midfielder had lost influence as Gustavo Puerta was used more often.
During the tournament, the 26-year-old featured in all five of Colombia’s games, each time as a substitute.
In his note, he said the ending was not what they dreamed of and that it hurt, then thanked Colombia for believing, for every message and prayer, and for being with the team at every step.
He added that hearing the anthem at the tournament gave them goosebumps, and that despite the distance, supporters made them feel at home, a kindness they will not forget. He closed by thanking people for walking with the team and said it will always be a source of pride to defend these colours.
