River Plate have unveiled a project to complete and fully roof the Monumental, increasing capacity and shielding almost all spectators.

The club said in a video address by president Stefano Di Carlo that work will start in April, take three years and be financed by international loans, leaving day-to-day income untouched.

A new perimeter of columns will support expanded stands and the roof. A continuous upper tier will link San Martín, Belgrano, Sívori and Centenario into a 360-degree bowl, creating 16,000 extra member seats. The canopy will reach the pitch edge to protect most fans.

The plan is framed as the next step in an eight-decade journey, citing Antonio Vespucio Liberti, José Julián Degrossi and Enrique Pardo, and emphasising continuity over 12 years from Rodolfo D’Onofrio to Jorge Brito, with the pandemic pitch revamp a turning point.

The design was developed over a year with German firm SBP, with vice-president Mariano Taratuty playing a central role.

Loans will carry competitive rates and long terms, and will be repaid only from new stadium revenues, chiefly extra seats and season tickets, not from membership fees, TV rights or other regular streams.

The project will be coordinated with the City Government to protect the neighbourhood. More than 350,000 members underpin the club’s non-profit model, enabling a build of this scale.
