Rob Elliot appointed Carlisle United manager after Gateshead departure | OneFootball

Rob Elliot has been appointed Carlisle United manager, succeeding Mark Hughes less than 24 hours after leaving Gateshead.

According to Sunderland Echo, the former Newcastle United and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper parted company with the Heed on Wednesday after weeks of talks with the International Stadium hierarchy over progress on and off the pitch ended without agreement.

Carlisle, one of two clubs interested in Elliot, moved quickly after confirming a managerial change on Thursday lunchtime.

Elliot will hope to push the Cumbrians towards an EFL return in the new season, after a play-off semi-final home defeat by Boreham Wood ended hopes of promotion back to League Two.

He has outlined an attacking, aggressive approach with and without the ball, built on adaptability and clear plans for each opponent. Getting to know the squad to maximise training and match performance sits at the core of that. He also cites alignment with the owners’ vision and Carlisle’s status as a one club city, stressing a team that represents its fans, people and community.
