Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has paid a warm tribute to Sunderland ahead of a summer pre-season friendly between the clubs in the United States.
The club said in a statement that the squad will spend one week in Nashville, finishing with a meeting with reigning Premier League champions Liverpool at Geodis Park on Saturday 25 July.
Sunderland will then travel to Harrison, New Jersey to face Leeds United, another Premier League side, on Thursday 30 July at the Sports Illustrated Stadium, home of the New York Red Bulls and Gotham FC, before concluding against Wrexham at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania on Sunday 02 August.
McElhenney joined fellow co-owner Ryan Reynolds on the commentary gantry for Wrexham’s 2-0 Championship win over Swansea City on Friday, and used the broadcast to praise Sunderland. He lauded the Sunderland ’Til I Die documentary, said it would be an honour to meet in Philadelphia, and welcomed their long-awaited return to the Premier League last year.
There remains a distinct possibility Wrexham could join them in the Premier League next season. Led by former Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson, they have won three successive promotions and sit sixth in the Championship, on course for a play-off place after four wins in their past five league games.
