Roberto De Zerbi is in advanced discussions to become Tottenham’s next manager, with the club pushing to install him as soon as possible. Negotiations are ongoing and both sides are willing to make it work, but nothing has been signed. Spurs hope to confirm an appointment within the next few days.
They want a manager in place this week to prepare for the trip to Sunderland on 12 April and before players return from international duty on Wednesday. Igor Tudor left by mutual consent on Sunday after 44 days. The Mirror reports that, although a caretaker involving a former player was considered, the first approach was to De Zerbi.
The role will be permanent, and De Zerbi, previously reluctant to start before the summer despite the job’s appeal after leaving Marseille, is now open to taking charge immediately.
Spurs value his bold, tactically astute football, seen as crucial with seven matches remaining.
Tudor’s brief tenure proved damaging, leaving Tottenham one point above the relegation zone, and they could be in the bottom three before their next game if West Ham beat Wolves two days earlier. The club had planned to wait until the summer, yet the prospect of relegation is seen as unthinkable. They have not won a Premier League match this calendar year.
If appointed, De Zerbi’s immediate focus would be securing top-flight safety. He has already drawn criticism from at least three Spurs supporters’ groups over his public support for Mason Greenwood while at Marseille.
