Roberto De Zerbi has ruled first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario out of Sunday’s trip to Sunderland after surgery for a pre-existing hernia issue during the recent break, and this match at the Stadium of Light comes too soon. He hopes the Italian could return next week, though that remains uncertain.

According to Sunderland Echo, Rodrigo Bentancur also remains unavailable, with Mohammed Kudus having been ruled out earlier in the week. De Zerbi said he has the options to manage the absences.

He said Spurs still have enough to compete and make points, and he highlighted attackers including Kolo Muani, Mathys Tel, Xavi, Richarlison and Solanke. He added that youngsters Bergvall, Archie Gray and Xavi Simons, plus senior figures Van de Ven, Romero and Porro, will be important. He described Kudus as a crucial player in his plans but urged the squad to look forward.

De Zerbi said he has watched many recent Tottenham games and that working with the players on the pitch is different from observing at home. While Spurs could be in the relegation zone by kick-off, he remains confident he has the tools he needs for the final seven games. He said his target is to help them play well and enjoy the ball.

Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris said Robin Roefs is back in contention for Sunday. Jocelin, Romaine, Bertrand and Simon are sidelined, with Ballard and Nilson close to returning but likely to be short for Tottenham. The rest of his squad are available.
