L'Équipe reports that Roberto Mancini is being lined up to return as Italy head coach, with the Euro 2021 winner believed to have been preferred to Antonio Conte.
Italy’s latest failure to reach the 2026 World Cup has prompted change within the federation.
Mancini previously led the national team from 2018 to 2023. The Al-Saad coach in Qatar, 61, is close to resuming charge.
During his first spell he won the European Championship in 2021, beating England 2-1 in the final, and set a run of 37 matches without defeat from October 2018 to October 2021.
He resigned in the summer of 2023 after failing to qualify Italy for the 2022 World Cup. If reappointed, his clear target would be to launch a new cycle and reach the 2030 finals, which Italy have not contested since 2014.
