Bo Henriksen’s Mainz ground out a win against Bosnian champions Zrinjski Mostar, with Nelson Weiper’s first-half tap-in proving decisive. Despite playing with a man advantage from the 37th minute, the 05ers struggled to make it count and were made to work until the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Robin Zentner admitted his side must be more clinical in such situations:
"Having the man advantage didn't really help us. We struggled in the second half. We definitely have to make things easier for ourselves.”
Head coach Bo Henriksen shared similar thoughts but was still pleased with the outcome:
"We didn't play well enough. It's always difficult in Europe, but we have six points from two games - outstanding."
Despite the unspectacular performance, Henriksen was especially happy for the fans:
"A great evening for everyone. For our fans - that's important. These evenings are magical."
Match winner Nelson Weiper also reflected on the performance:
“We would have liked to have created more clear chances, especially with the man advantage. But Mostar played well and defended with a lot of heart. That made things difficult. We didn’t give them many chances and kept pushing for more goals. We now just need points in the Bundesliga. But of course, it’s a boost for us to get a win and be able to celebrate it with the fans."
With European duties handled for now, Mainz turn their focus back to domestic action. A tough trip to Stuttgart awaits on Sunday, as Henriksen’s men look to translate their continental success into much-needed Bundesliga points.
