Manchester City midfielder Rodri has responded to his controversial interview opening a door to joining Real Madrid amid uncertainty over his club future.
The 29-year-old is into the final 15 months of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium and is expected to hold future talks with club bosses in the coming months.
Rodri has returned to regular first-team football since January after an injury-ravaged 18 months on the sidelines, having recently said he feels like the “Rodri of old” as the Blues eye a domestic treble.
The Spain international has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid after admitting he would not ignore transfer interest from the Spanish capital despite his background at Atletico Madrid.
How Man City have reacted to Rodri’s transfer comments concerning Real Madrid
In a fresh interview after Spain’s 3-0 win over Serbia on Friday night, Rodri has clarified his comments on his Manchester City future and him being open to returning to Spain.
“Well, I’m used to it,” the midfielder said as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. “If, out of a 50-minute interview, they cut out whatever they want – in the end, I don’t have much more to say.
“I’m a person who speaks directly. The interview is there if you want to listen to it in its entirety, and not just certain snippets.”
Manchester City fans have expressed their displeasure at Rodri publicly opening himself to joining Real Madrid, a fierce European rival who have eliminated the Blues from the UEFA Champions League in each of the last three seasons.
In a recent appearance on Radioestadio Noche, Rodri said he would consider moving to Real Madrid if Los Blancos were to strengthen their interest in him.
“I have one year left on my Manchester City contract,” Rodri said. “At some point, we’ll have to sit down and talk. Even though I’ve played for Atleti (Atletico Madrid), (Real) Madrid isn’t a closed door for me – you can’t turn your back on the best clubs.
Real Madrid set to snub Rodri transfer approach despite public come-get-me plea
“Playing at the (Santiago) Bernabéu is always incredible, it’s very intimidating. I hadn’t planned to play outside of Spain but Manchester City came up (as an option in 2019).
“I would like to return to the Spanish league, I still follow it. The Premier (League) is my weakness but it is also a very demanding league. For now, I am very happy there (at Manchester City.”
