Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini has told Brighton loanee Evan Ferguson he needs to do better, while insisting there is no animosity towards him.
There have long been suggestions Roma could seek an early end to the season-long deal if Albion agree, though Gasperini has not pushed for it. Gazzetta Dello Sport suggested this week that the club had already made their decision.
That line was quickly picked up by supporters and media, and arrived days after Albion striker Stefanos Tzimas suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for months.
Gasperini has generally backed Ferguson, who has had a fitness issue, but before the Europa League trip to Celtic he demanded a stronger approach. He said selection is about performances, that Ferguson has had chances and the club are prepared to wait, yet the forward must improve not only technically but in human terms.
Service to Ferguson has been sparse when he has played in Serie A and in the Europa League. Gasperini accepted the side have not been prolific this season, describing a structural difficulty, and said the last two games produced too few dangerous situations.
He framed it as a collective problem rather than an individual one.
