AS Roma’s proposed stadium in Pietralata cleared a major hurdle on Friday as Rome’s city council approved the project by a wide margin.
According to L'Équipe, 39 of the 44 councillors backed the club’s technical and economic feasibility plan, paving the way for construction envisaged from 2027 in the north-east district.
Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, said there was a strong majority for the scheme. He suggested work could begin in the first part of 2027 and the venue could be ready to host Euro 2032 matches, which Italy and Türkiye will co-host.
Several approvals are still required from various authorities, including at regional level. The process is often criticised by Serie A clubs as a brake on modernising an ageing stock of stadiums.
Roma currently share the Stadio Olimpico with city rivals Lazio, though both clubs have long sought homes of their own.
The Giallorossi are developing a 60,000-seat stadium in Pietralata, with the total cost estimated at one billion euros.
