Spain knocked out Portugal 1-0, Cristiano Ronaldo left in tears, Belgium swept past the United States 4-1, and Kylian Mbappé drew high-profile support after racist abuse.
Spain won on Monday night thanks to a late strike from Moreno in normal time, and remain the only side yet to concede at this World Cup. They will face Belgium on Friday, Le Progres reports.
Ronaldo’s exit felt like a farewell, but he left his international future open. He said this was his last World Cup, while not ruling out future call-ups, and Jorge Jesus, expected to replace Roberto Martinez, knows him from Saudi Arabia.
Belgium’s tie came amid controversy after Donald Trump urged Folarin Balogun’s red card be overturned. The dismissal was rescinded and he started, but Charles de Ketelaere struck twice before the break as Belgium won 4-1.
It also means FIFA president Gianni Infantino has seen all three host nations eliminated before the quarter-finals.
Mbappé denounced remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after France beat Paraguay 1-0 in the last 16. Emmanuel Macron, sports minister Marina Ferrari and the FFF also condemned them, with the federation reporting the matter to prosecutors as Paraguay’s government distanced itself.
