Wayne Rooney has called for Ruben Amorim to fix the ‘obvious’ issues in his Manchester United side.

Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League table after losing 3-0 at Manchester City on Sunday.

Their one win from four games this season is the club’s worst start to a Premier League campaign since 1992/93. It’s a continuation of a torrid tenure for Amorim, who has won just 26% of his league games since taking the job at Old Trafford in November 2024.

The Portuguese coach has persisted with the 3-4-3 formation that brought success at former club Sporting Lisbon, but the club’s nightmare run of results has brought repeated criticism.

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has implored Amorim to adapt, insisting it is ‘obvious’ to all where the Red Devils continue to be exposed. He said being outnumbered in midfield is damaging hopes of being competitive.

“The problem with this [3-4-3] system is having two in [central] midfield,” he said on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show.

“The players have not got the energy and legs to cover the full width of the pitch and go up and down. They’re getting overrun and overpowered in that midfield.

“Listen, I have had my time as a manager, and I know how it works, and I know how it is when someone else looks and critiques your formation. I can understand that, but it is so obvious.

“If you’re struggling, you have to put three in midfield and give yourself a chance to compete.”
