Managers at Chelsea have some power, but in many ways they’re just carrying out the orders of the club.

That’s very clear in team selection – with players like Reece James and Wesley Fofana who have a bad injury history, the managers are not given a free hand to pick them when they like.

The same seems to be true of Estevao. He’s not got injury problems – but he needs to be treated carefully simply because he’s so young and so precocious. We’ve seen many great players burn out after being overused after their breakthrough.

No matter how good his form, he only gets one start a week, and sometimes less than that. In the post match press conference today after he inspired his team to a win, manager Liam Rosenior revealed a bit about how the club are looking after him.

“Firstly, off the pitch, I know his family are here with him. I know the club have worked really, really hard for him to settle,” Rosenior said.

“I also know that Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro have helped him especially settle into this country. In terms of on the pitch, with an 18-year-old with a talent like his, you have to manage his minutes. You have to manage the games that you think are the right moments for him to have an impact and I’ll keep doing that because I want him to have an outstanding season. I want him to have an outstanding career as well.”

Rosenior also spoke about Andrey Santos, who played well in a double pivot with Moises Caicedo in the game yesterday and performed really well.

Rosenior also praised Estevao Willian, who played a brilliant game down the wing and scored the opening goal for his team. But the coach also wanted to make sure everyone got their due.
