It was defeat for Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi final tonight, but almost as important as the game was the updates on the five players who rather unexpectedly missed it.
After the game, manager Liam Rosenior was asked for an update both on the status of the players we knew were doubts, and those who had been expected to play.

“For Cole [Palmer], the game came too early for him. Hopefully he’ll be able to train on Friday. He had a minor strain on his thigh,” Rosenior began, revealing that the attacker’s injury is a new one not related to his ongoing groin issue.
“Reece [James] had a big knock on his hip, it was too sore for him today. Jamie [Gittens] was ill last night, [Liam] Delap was due to play today and felt ill four hours before the game. Malo Gusto was ill.
“Moises Caicedo was suspended. I want to keep the ill players away from the group so it doesn’t spread. Both of them had dangerously high temperatures. Hopefully they can be rested and be fine for Saturday.”
In all cases it sounds like they’re very much on the cards to be ready to play this weekend. Palmer will have at best one day of training, which sounds like the least certain.
Chelsea’s second goal wasn’t particularly deserved, but we’ll take it. Alejandro Garnacho had a tough job on his hands to keep his effort down as it flew to him, but he pulled it off nicely.
The first goal came from Garnacho too, in a similar position. Both of them were technically, dealing with a tricky ball coming in, and both have brought the Blues to within one goal of their opposition, giving some hope with a second leg still to play.
