Liam Rosenior gave short shrift to Javier Pastore after the agent of Enzo Fernandez complained the Chelsea player was unfairly punished.
The Argentine midfielder was suspended for two games by the club after expressing his desire to live in Madrid someday, fuelling speculation of a potential move to Real Madrid amid reports linking him with the Spanish giants.
“Enzo didn’t understand the situation,” Pastore claimed in an interview with The Athletic. “When the coach told him, he accepted it because he’s a highly professional guy who’s always fully committed wherever he is and respects decisions.
“But we don’t understand the punishment because he doesn’t mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it.
“He only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he’d like to live in one day… but at no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea or London.”
Speaking after the Blues’ 7-0 win over Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals, for which Fernandez was seated in the stands, Rosenior refused to give Pastore’s comments any credence.
“That’s his opinion,” the Chelsea boss said in his post-match press conference. “I don’t have anything to say on someone else’s opinion.
“Enzo knows what I think of him and it was brilliant to see him here to support the players today. We’ll move forward and make sure we have a really good run-in to the season.”
Rosenior also would not confirm if Fernandez had apologised for his remarks. “I said yesterday, the conversations I have with my individual players when it comes to things like this stay within. The dressing room is sacred.
“I made it clear what I think of him as a person. He’s a top, top guy. But at the same time I want us to focus on the football and achieve what we want to achieve through the season.”
He added: “In the right time – which isn’t now – I’m sure the discussion will happen in terms of what has been said between me and Enzo.
“Me and Enzo are in a very good place. I saw him today. I had a really good conversation today with him on a one-to-one. Things aren’t what people maybe think they are.”
