A week into Leonardo Jardim’s tenure, Flamengo have introduced new routines and rules, with a reunion against Cruzeiro at the Maracanã at 21:30 Brasília time offering an early test of his ideas.
According to Globo.com, the squad will on Tuesday mirror Saturday’s schedule, reporting to Ninho do Urubu at 17:00 for a final session and to go into camp, plus a matchday-morning workout focused on activation, positional play and set pieces.
Jardim used similar habits at Cruzeiro, where this was standard at home and dependent on logistics away, and it could become routine on forthcoming trips.
Inside the club he is seen as direct yet empathetic, attentive and quick to read dynamics. He has set his own rules, is more flexible than Filipe Luís over partial training access, and demands standards firmly, with no issues so far.
He has met players and directors to build rapport. Concentration might not be fixed for the season, but he believes proximity will help him complete the transition after the previous coach’s long spell.
Another change is a ban on mobile phones in the dressing room, with devices left outside. Previously they were barred only in the pre-match period, and the squad have accepted the measures.
There was irritation at commentary about player conduct. Bap viewed Filipe Luís and José Boto as too liberal in some respects, which informed the president’s move for Jardim, and Léo Ortiz later voiced annoyance at such criticism.
The meeting of two state champions also brings reunions, with Gerson and Tite back at the Maracanã. Jardim faces the club he once said would be the only one he would coach in Brazil, a switch that angered many in Minas Gerais, and he later cited personal issues and internal differences for his exit. Relations with Pedro Lourenço were positive, though disagreements involved decisions by Pedro Júnior, and players praised how he organised the environment.
