Manchester United’s summer business concluded with the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the final echelons of the window, with the Belgian replacing the outgoing Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

However, the former Royal Antwerp stopper is yet to make his debut for United with Altay Bayindir keeping goal for the Manchester Derby defeat and the recent win against Chelsea.

The role of United’s number one is undoubtedly one of the most scrutinized positions in British football and Ruben Amorim clearly has that in mind with his new ‘keeper.

Former United goalie stresses Lammens will need time

Roy Caroll is someone that knows the pressures that come with the role and has urged United fans to be patient with the 23-year-old who will need time to adjust to his new surroundings, as reported by BBC Sport.

The former Northern Ireland international cited David de Gea’s early struggles as an example of what patience can bring with the Spaniard going on to enjoy a fine career in Manchester.

“He’s only 23, please, please give him time and let him grow as a Manchester United goalkeeper. We did it for David de Gea when he came in. He was a very young goalkeeper and a successful one even before he came to Manchester United as well.

“Time is a precious commodity but we need to give it. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes, the key is not to make too many,” said Caroll.

Early signs are good ones

Despite Caroll’s calls for caution, Simon Stone reports the early signs are positive with Lammens impressing in training and pushing for his chance in the first team.

Dislodging Bayindir should not be a dauting prospect for the young ‘keeper with the Turk not exactly exuding confidence in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

Mistakes against Arsenal and Burnley alongside a shaky display in the Derby mean the United umber one shirt is up for grabs an Lammens will surely have his eye on owning it by the end of the season.

Compatriot and former Premier League defender Toby Alderweireld has tipped Lammens for a bright future, describing him as a “perfect fit in England” due to his size and stature.

Amorim has gave no indication of when we’ll see the Belgian make his bow but United fans will be keen to see their newest signing in action, even if it is with the caution their former ‘keeper has urged.

After beating Chelsea at Old Trafford, Amorim is aiming for his first back-to-back wins in the Premier League when he travels to Brentford for the lunchtime kick off, on Saturday.
