Ruben Amorim admitted Manchester United could switch to a four-man defence to compensate for the loss of key players to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Amorim had previously said that ‘not even the Pope’ could make him change his tactics after a poor run of results.
However, Amroim has admitted he could abandon his 3-4-2-1 system after losing Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui to AFCON.
When asked about how he will cope with the loss of three key stars, Amorim said: “It will depend on the way we play that particular week.
“But if we have to change to a back four, we change to a back four.”
United will also be missing Casemiro after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the 4-4 draw with Bournemouth.
The 33-year-old’s absence means Kobbie Mainoo could make his first Premier League start this season.
The midfielder’s brother caused a stir on Monday night by wearing a ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ t-shirt during the game against Bournemouth.
The youngster could push for a move away from United as he will be desperate for more first-team action to secure a place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Napoli have been credited with an interest in Mainoo, while Chelsea are also keen on him.
