Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admits he and his players have been performing below expectations this season, while naming Casemiro as a prime example.

The Red Devils boast one of the most expensive squads to be ever been assembled, and yet they are currently lying in a miserable 14th place in the table.

Therefore, the club’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe didn’t mince his words when lamenting the fact that his club is still paying the instalments for five players who have largely disappointed since their arrival, labeling them ‘overpaid’ and ‘not good enough’. The stars in question are Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro.

Therefore, Amorim admitted the 72-year-old billionaire has a point. The manager didn’t exempt himself from the responsibility, but insisted he and his players have been underperforming, especially Casemiro.

The Portuguese notes that much more is expected from the midfielder who won everything during his time at Real Madrid.

“I think if we are being honest, everybody – me and the players – we are underperforming this season, so we can change that,” said the 40-year-old in his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s second leg clash against Real Sociedad in the Europa League Round of 16.

“You are talking about players like Casemiro for example, who have won everything and we know that this kind of players can play so much better. He [Ratcliffe] was honest on that.

“The focus is to change his mind and change all the people’s minds. It’s the right way to do it. Even people say I’m not good enough for this club and my feeling is that you can change that with results. In training, I feel that they want this really bad, especially for tomorrow.”

Casemiro has been dropped to the bench following Amorim’s arrival, but is seeing more playing time as of late in the absence of Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo. The Brazilian had his struggles this season, but was nonetheless praised for his display against Arsenal last Sunday.
