The debate over Benfica’s dugout succession has resurfaced, with Ruben Amorim again floated as a potential successor to José Mourinho at the end of the season.
According to talkSPORT, European football specialist Andy Brassell believes the Portuguese coach could be a natural option for Benfica next season, particularly with the market short on alternatives.
He argued Amorim is unlikely to accept a project mid-season, referencing the Manchester United situation, and said the coach preferred to start work in the summer but was pushed to move at that time.
Brassell ruled out an immediate return to the Premier League and said Spain’s elite are not realistic options, while the likes of Valencia and Sevilla lack the funds to tempt him.
He added that there are few obvious destinations, suggesting the Bundesliga might suit Amorim, and that he may reach elite level later but must prove himself elsewhere first.
Amorim played for Benfica from 2008 to 2015 and won three league titles, one Portuguese Cup, five League Cups and one Super Cup.
