Ruben Amorim said Manchester United’s tactical shift was about adaptation rather than outside pressure after Friday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

United lined up 4-2-3-1, shelving his favoured 3-4-3 for the first time since his arrival. According to L'Équipe, fans and media had long pushed for a change and, in September, he had joked that not even the Pope would persuade him.

Speaking on Monday, the former Sporting coach said the team are trying to build an identity and must adapt to availability. He cited injuries to Fernandes, de Ligt, Mainoo and Maguire, plus Africa Cup of Nations absences for Mbeumo, Diallo and Mazraoui.

He insisted the decision was not driven by media or fan clamour. He added that changing because of that narrative would make players think he was bowing to pressure, which he said would be the end for the coach.

United face bottom club Wolverhampton on Tuesday without Bruno Fernandes due to a hamstring injury. Amorim joked the captain already wants to train, often attends sessions after treatment and cannot stay quiet, which he said is why he wears the armband.
