Amidst the ever-growing list of lacklustre Manchester United signings over the last decade, they occasionally unearth a gem who takes to the pressure like a duck to water.
For most of the Old Trafford faithful, Bruno Fernandes will spring to mind as a prime example of such. He joined from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 and transitioned seamlessly to the English top-flight – so much so that he was named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year at the end of his maiden campaign, despite playing only half!
Now, it’s Noussair Mazraoui who has fans taken aback with his tremendous performances week in and week out. Even when the side hasn’t been at their best, he’s been colossal in defence and superb in getting up the pitch to try and create an attack. What makes it that bit sweeter for United is that he cost only £12.8 million when he made the switch from the Allianz in July.
The Moroccan international quickly became a mainstay in the starting XI after his move from Bayern Munich, and there’s no chance that will be changing under Ruben Amorim.

Indeed, the new head coach addressed Mazraoui’s outstanding form in his pre-Arsenal press conference this evening, telling reporters: “He is a top player because he understands the game, he is very good defensively, very good one on one, I think he is the future of our team, we need more players like Nous who can control the tempo, he is really good with the ball.”
Such praise was previously echoed by ex-Red Owen Hargreaves. After United overturned Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League last week, he shared his analysis on Amorim’s defensive depth post-match, saying: “There are so many different options to come. It’ll just be exciting to get [Leny] Yoro back fit, [Luke] Shaw back fit, Mazraoui plays amazing every time he plays, there’s a lot of potential here.”
