Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United head coach on Monday morning after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, the club said in a statement. Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis.
Amorim arrived 14 months ago from Sporting at the age of 40. United are sixth, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal, after a difficult December with one win in their last five matches.
His overall win rate stands at 39.6% since November 2024. United finished 2024-2025 in 15th place, 24 points off the top four, having been within four points when he was appointed.
A run to the Europa League final in May 2025 ended in a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham and did not alter the overall picture.
On Sunday Amorim made widely discussed comments, noting he was not Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel or José Mourinho and describing himself as United’s manager rather than only the coach. Those remarks included that he would not resign, that the arrangement would last 18 months and that he would work until replaced. He was under contract until June 2027.
Fletcher, the former United midfielder with 342 appearances and 24 goals between 2002 and 2015 and ex-U18 coach, will lead the team on Wednesday at Burnley in the Premier League.
