Manchester United’s midfield largely plays a lesser role in build-up under Ruben Amorim, who wants his side to be faster and more direct in possession.
Interestingly, this approach has only emphasised the importance of Casemiro. United’s quick progression leads to less control and more transitions, but the veteran midfielder’s tendency to snuff out attacks keeps the scoreline in check.
As per Statman Dave, United concede a goal every 123 minutes on average when Casemiro is on the pitch. In his absence, they let in a goal every 29 minutes. Amorim desperately needs a more capable defensive midfielder than Manuel Ugarte to seamlessly replace the Brazilian.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are one of the “leading candidates” for the signature of Ruben Neves.
The former Wolves midfielder, currently plying his trade at Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, has reportedly made it clear that he wants to return to the Premier League.
Neves’ desire and his dwindling contract, due to expire at the end of the season, has opened the door for United to make a serious push for his signature.
According to Fichajes, United have accelerated their plans to strengthen their midfield with the addition of Neves in January.
It is understood initial talks over a winter move have already been held. Further, United have taken “concrete steps” to try to “close a deal” for the Portuguese midfielder, who is expected to cost around £18 million.
The 28-year-old earns over £400k-a-week in the Saudi Pro League. Still, figures at United believe the operation to sign Neves is viable from a financial point of view, as the Portugal international intends to prioritise sporting ambitions over a lucrative contract.
Newcastle United are also chasing Neves but Amorim’s project and United’s stature have put the Red Devils in a strong position.
Neves would be a brilliant mid-season signing, as he is well aware of the Premier League’s physicality and intensity.
Known for scoring absurd long-range goals, the ex-Wolves leader is calm in possession and defensively astute in the middle of the park.
