Rui Borges has downplayed José Mourinho’s claim that he did not want Sporting to become European champions, saying he respected the Benfica coach’s view and was untroubled by it.
According to Glorioso 1904, the Sporting manager spoke after the game against Alverca, responding to remarks Mourinho made at the end of Benfica’s meeting with Vitória SC.
Asked whether he would like Benfica to be European champions, Borges said he is Portuguese above all and wants Portuguese sides to win.
Mourinho had assessed Sporting’s Champions League run and said he disliked the idea of seeing the club lift the trophy, noting he remains the last Portuguese coach to do so.
As the league enters its final stretch, Benfica sit third on 62 points, level with second-placed Sporting, who have one match in hand. Both are chasing leaders Porto. Benfica visit Casa Pia on 5 April.
