Rui Costa slipped on the stadium stairs as he left immediately after Benfica’s 2-1 defeat at St. Gallen in the Europa League, according to Glorioso 1904. The president appeared visibly upset and made no comment.

At the final whistle, the Benfica president hurried from the directors’ area. On the steps he lost his footing, rose quickly and continued on his way.

The loss came in the first leg of the second qualifying round. The tie remains open, Marco Silva’s side must beat St. Gallen at Estádio da Luz to stay in the competition.

The return is scheduled for Thursday, 30 July, with kick-off at 20:00.

If Benfica fail to overturn the deficit, they will drop into the third qualifying round of the Conference League to face the loser of Sheriff Tiraspol against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

Going into the second leg of that tie, the opponent could be the Moldovan side after Sheriff Tiraspol lost 5-0 in the first game. Even then, Benfica would still need to win a play-off to reach the league phase.
