Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs has insisted that Marcus Rashford needs to “play with freedom and enjoyment” in order to get back to his sensational best.
Rashford sealed a loan move to Aston Villa last Sunday after falling out of favour at United under Amorim.
The forward scored just 81 seconds into Amorim’s debut in the United dugout and ultimately amassed three goals in six appearances before he was dropped for the Manchester derby in mid-December.
Amorim never afforded Rashford another minute of first-team football after that and only included him in one subsequent matchday squad before sanctioning his loan switch to Villa.
The United boss told reporters that he couldn’t get through to Rashford, with the pair failing to see eye to eye on football and training.
After the Red Devils’ FA Cup win over Leicester City on Friday, former captain Roy Keane questioned whether Villa is the right place for Rashford to get his hunger back.
Now, Giggs has called on the England international to find form again and prove his critics wrong.
Giggs was part of the club’s coaching staff when Rashford burst onto the scene and dramatically announced himself to the world.
The Welshman said [via Daily Mail], “Everyone will remember that smile and that enjoyment and freedom when he first came through – but he doesn’t look like that now.”
“He’s a human being and he just doesn’t look happy. He looks like he’s got the world on his shoulders. He needs to play with that freedom and enjoyment that got him to where he is now.”
Giggs added, “United need young players coming through, one of their own and it just felt that he was the next one.”
“But for whatever reason, he’s had a decent career but he’s never gone on to be what I thought he would be. More so than anything, he’s a human being and he just doesn’t look happy.”
“He looks like he’s got the world on his shoulders. And I don’t know why, because the lad who I saw and who I coached didn’t have the world on his shoulders.”
“He just played with freedom, he loved the club and was a great lad but he just doesn’t look it now.”
Rashford could make his Villa debut on Sunday when they come up against Tottenham Hotspur.
