Liverpool returned back to winning ways in the Premier League, beating Aston Villa 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Five minutes into the game, Villa almost opened the scoring when Morgan Rogers struck the woodwork with a curling effort.

The visitors came close to scoring again when Matty Cash’s effort towards the top corner was pushed onto the bar by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Dominik Szoboszlai squandered a big chance to give Liverpool the lead, pouncing on a loose ball before firing a weak shot towards goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Szoboszlai forced Martinez to make another save in the 32nd minute, as he parried the Hungarian’s free-kick away from danger.

Hugo Ekitike thought he had given Liverpool the lead after heading Szoboszlai’s cross into the net, but it was ruled offside.

Mohamed Salah eventually scored the Reds ‘ opener with a one-time finish, following Martinez’s poor pass, marking his 250th goal for the club.

According to OptaJoe, the Egyptian forward has now matched Wayne Rooney’s record for most goal involvements (276) for a single club in the Premier League.

Ryan Gravenberch doubled the defending champions’ lead before the hour mark with a deflected shot.

Substitute Donyell Malen got Villa’s first chance after the interval, when he smashed a shot wide of the left post.

Ross Barkley should have halved the deficit for Villa in the 78th minute, combining with fellow substitute Jadon Sancho, but could only blast his effort over the bar.

The defeat ends Villa’s six-match unbeaten in the league and hands Liverpool’s first win in five league games.
