Salah spark, Mac Allister double: Liverpool crush Qarabag to reach last 16
Liverpool qualified directly for the Champions League round of 16 after dominant 6-0 win over Qarabag at Anfield.
Liverpool secured automatic qualification for Champions League round of 16 with commanding 6-0 victory over Qarabag on matchday 8 of the league phase at Anfield.
The Reds delivered ruthless attacking performance, with Mohamed Salah starting the match and playing key role in the win as Arne Slot’s side finished the group stage strongly and moved to 18 point.
Liverpool forced into early substitution when Jeremie Frimpong picked up injury while chasing a long ball.
Slot brought on Wataru Endo in the fourth minute but the disruption did not affect Liverpool’s rhythm.
The home side opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Alexis Mac Allister who headed in after Dominik Szoboszlai delivered corner and Virgil van Dijk provided the flick-on.
Just six minute later, Florian Wirtz doubled Liverpool’s lead.
The German midfielder received pass from Hugo Ekitike and fired powerful low strike from the edge of the box to make it 2-0.
Liverpool continued to create chances before halftime, with Salah threatening from set-pieces and open play.
After the break the Egyptian forward produced standout moment.
In the 50 minute, Salah scored Liverpool’s third goal with brilliant left-footed free-kick into the top corner leaving Qarabag’s goalkeeper with no chance.
Soon after Ekitike added spectacular fourth goal beating his marker in the air and lifting the ball over the goalkeeper into the net.
Mac Allister then scored his second of the night in the 61 minute from close range completing dominant midfield display.
Slot made several changes in second half giving minutes to squad players including Federico Chiesa who added the sixth goal in the 90 minute after coming off the bench.
The final whistle confirmed perfect European night for Liverpool who sealed direct passage to the knockout stage with one of their most convincing performances of the campaign.
