Igor San Román has confirmed he will not run against Jon Uriarte in Athletic’s presidential race, suggesting there will be no vote on 8 May as Uriarte moves closer to a further four-year term.
The former head of communications, architect of the 2022 IZAN Athletic project and a board member until his resignation on 19 February, used Instagram to explain a difficult decision after what he described as very tough days.
San Román said he felt significant backing and believed there was a capable team and a project in place, yet chose not to take the step, apologising to those who had placed their trust in him and calling it a defining choice.
He hinted at differences with Uriarte’s management line and restated his vision for Athletic, built on an elite structure with a homely spirit, rooted in Euskal Herria, inclusive in the stands and fair to those who think differently, and with the club acting as a driver of the Basque language and culture. He added that he felt able to lead such a club.
San Román said he would continue to contribute from elsewhere, stressing family considerations and a wish to avoid a fratricidal contest with Uriarte. Uriarte, meanwhile, has already secured 2,070 endorsements in just 48 hours, clearing the first barrier to formal candidacy, and no rival is currently in sight.
