Sandro Tonali delivered a statement performance in Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Manchester United, who suffered their first defeat under Michael Carrick.
At St James’ Park, form went out of the window as Newcastle dominated play from the start against the Red Devils, largely due to the physicality and intensity of their midfield.
Both Tonali and Joelinton outmuscled the likes of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, refusing to allow United a moment’s peace even after going a man down.
It is no secret that Manchester United intend to strengthen their midfield. However, Sandro Tonali‘s all-round display underlined exactly what the Premier League giants should look for in the summer.
The 25-year-old, who has drawn comparisons to the great Andrea Pirlo for his technical prowess, has adjusted incredibly well to the Premier League’s physicality. United legend Paul Scholes considers the Italian midfielder to be better than Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
Tonali’s form and reputation have made him one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe.
According to TuttoSport (via Get Italian Football News), United, Arsenal and Juventus are all chasing Tonali.
The Italian publication claims the “unbelievable” midfielder’s agent was present in the stands during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Brighton. He has already suggested that Tonali will hold transfer talks with Newcastle at the end of the season.
The Magpies appear to be resigned to losing Tonali. It is claimed they are demanding €100 million (£86.7m) for a summer sale.
It is also reported that United view the Newcastle man as a replacement for the departing Casemiro.
Juventus dream of luring Tonali back to Serie A, but the Premier League side’s price tag is expected to blow them out of the water.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Tonali is “keen to join” United despite interest from elsewhere.
