Santos overcame a dreadful first half to beat UCV 4-2 at Vila Belmiro on Tuesday, advancing from the Copa Sudamericana playoffs. Half-time changes by Cuca, notably the introductions of Gabriel Bontempo and Neymar, transformed the performance.
Diario Do Peixe’s player ratings highlight Gabriel Menino scoring and helping create Miguelito’s goal, the latter profiting from goalkeeper Schiavone’s error. Rony also found the net and hit the post, while Gabriel Barbosa scored one, saw another ruled out and was involved in a further goal.
UCV struck after 18 seconds when Adonís Frias’s mistake gifted the opener, then defender Mottes added their second. After the interval, Santos wrested control.
Goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão was blameless for the concessions and made a strong save in each half, though his rushes still unsettled. Lucas Veríssimo brought composure, whereas William Arão endured a poor night with simple passes going astray.
Christian Oliva distributed well without much bite, and Rollheiser worked tirelessly. Escobar failed to clear for UCV’s second yet produced a couple of timely challenges, Igor Vinícius made unforced errors, and Barreal nearly scored and slipped a fine ball to Gabigol. Cuca’s interventions were decisive in the turnaround.
