Santos plan to use the money from Souza’s move to Tottenham of England to keep wages on time. According to Globo.com, the board plan to direct the income to stabilise payroll.

Tottenham are paying almost R$ 95 million, with Santos entitled to 87.5 percent. More than R$ 82 million will go into club coffers.

The deal followed a Santos counter-offer setting a €15 million release price. Souza also surrendered 12.5 percent, half of his own rights, increasing the club’s take.

The club needed a major sale to ease cash flow and keep salaries stable. Marketing are seeking a main shirt sponsor to fill the vacant slot.

The wage bill is heavy, particularly after Neymar’s renewal and Gabigol’s arrival.

Other recent arrivals include Mayke and Billal Brahimi, who came from Europe. Santos also invested in Tiquinho Soares, Willian Arão, Rollheiser and Barreal, now signed permanently. Outlay on this group is close to R$ 12 million.

Brahimi’s signing has been criticised, and the Algerian has barely featured amid adaptation issues. Guilherme left this year, while Robinho Jr. and Lautaro Díaz have taken minutes instead.

Santos are focused on signing Michael from Flamengo but are waiting for clarity on his situation. For Michael and others, the board currently rule out major spending and will monitor the market.
