Santos’ Copa Sudamericana play-off with UCV is scheduled in Caracas as Venezuela reels from two powerful earthquakes that left hundreds dead and wrecked infrastructure.
The first leg is on 21 July in Caracas, with the return a week later at Vila Belmiro. If Santos advance, they face Maracá in the last 16.
The first tremor measured 7.2 near San Felipe in Yaracuy, then, 39 seconds later, a 7.5 shock intensified damage in Caracas and on the coast. It is the country's strongest recorded in more than a century.
Officials report 188 deaths, 1,520 hospitalised and 157 missing. At least 250 buildings were destroyed or badly damaged, eight hospitals reported damage and Maiquetía International Airport closed due to structural issues. A state of disaster was declared.
UCV posted a message of solidarity to victims and families, urging calm and asking people to follow guidance from authorities and civil protection. It offered its platforms for useful information, collection points and emergency numbers, stressing unity and mutual support.
Santos also issued a note expressing solidarity with Venezuelans, describing a brutal quake that caused deaths and irreparable damage, and directing fans to a donation link on its social channels. The club highlighted emergency relief work by partner ACNUR inside the country.
