NJ/NY Gotham FC has been building for the future and locking down some of their top players for the next few seasons, and Monday was no different. The team announced that they signed rookie Sarah Schupansky to a contract extension. Originally, she had an option for 2027, but now, the contract extension has her signed through the end of that year.
Schupansky has had a good first season in the NWSL. From her performance against the Washington Spirit on the road when she scored her first professional goal to her five assists for the Bats, the player has been one of the top rookies in the league.
Sure, the Gotham midfielder has seen a little less time on the pitch with other players, like Rose Lavelle, playing more after injury. Plus, the addition of Jaedyn Shaw could also influence her playing time. However, it has been working out, for she has been playing a lot in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. It also allows everyone to rest and avoid overexertion as the final stretch of the season approaches.
Meanwhile, it was a little surprising that the extension was not until 2028 or 2029. She already had the option for 2027. Plus, if Schupansky wants to go to Europe in the future, a longer contract could help the club demand more money for a move. At the same time, perhaps Gotham wants to wait and see what happens with some of the other midfielders and whether they extend their stays beyond 2026, 2027, or 2028.
Nevertheless, the extension is still a good move for the Bats and Schupansky. The midfielder expressed her happiness about the news. “I am beyond excited and truly honored to be extending my contract with Gotham," she told gothamfc.com. "My time here has been nothing short of incredible, and it already feels like I’ve found a true home thanks to the amazing people I work with every day — from ownership and management to staff and teammates. I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received since day one, and I can’t thank everyone enough for welcoming me into this club and community."
Schupansky is another player that Gotham FC has extended this year. This is a good sign, especially after there were so many departures in the offseason and even a few during the current campaign. This highlights that she and others want to be here.
