England Women manager Sarina Wiegman has praised her side after they came from behind to beat World Champions Spain to win Euro 2025.

The Lionesses wrote the wrong of their 2023 World Cup final heartbreak against the Spanish as Hannah Hampton starred in the penalty shootout to deny Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey before Chloe Kelly fired home the winning penalty to ensure Wiegman’s side defended their European Championship title.

England led for a combined four minutes and 52 seconds during the knockout stages of the tournament, with the Lionesses having to come from behind in every single knockout match they played, two-goals against Sweden in the quarter-final, and one goal a piece against Italy and Spain in the semi-final and final respectively.

“I must admit that I always think this is the most chaotic and ridiculous tournament we have played,” Wiegman said.

“But every time we could come back, because quarter-final, semi-final, and now, in the final, we came from behind [to win].

“Of course, we have players that have talent and the togetherness of this team is really, really incredible. But also the belief that we can come back. The players say, ‘We can win by any means.’ We just never, ever give up.

“I’m very happy. I actually can’t believe it myself. How can this happen? But it happened. I’m so incredibly proud of the team and the staff. We’re just going to party tonight.”

Wiegman also praised the mentality of Lucy Bronze, the oldest player in the Lionesses squad at 33, who revealed after the match that she had been playing the entire of Euro 2025 with a fractured tibia.

Bronze started all six matches in the tournament, before being replaced in the second half of the final.

“Her mentality, the whole team has an incredible mentality, but she has a crazy mentality, it’s unbelievable.”

The Lionesses will now celebrate their incredible triumph with a parade through Central London, as they become the first England team in history to win a tournament on foreign soil.
