Svenja Schlenker on the significance of the match:“This is the biggest match in our still very young history. We had two fantastic derbies last season – that was very exciting – but now playing against Bayern, who are currently the best women’s football team in Germany, is something very special.”
... on her hopes and expectations:“I’ll be happy if we perform well on the pitch and show what we can do. And if we manage to appreciate and enjoy this game, because it really is the biggest in our history so far.”
...on the atmosphere with a crowd of over 1,000 spectators:“It’s exactly the right atmosphere for a match like this. Our girls love it. Many of them already know this from last season, but not all of them. I’m sure that the crowd of Black & Yellow fans who will be at the stadium on Monday will give the girls that extra push to get the most out of them.”
… on the days leading up to such a big game:“All of us in the support staff and the coaching team try to maintain calm and build anticipation. There will always be a little bit of nervousness. It’s a floodlit game and more than 10,000 fans will be there – up to 15,755 can fit in the stadium (to the online ticket shop). But I know from my own experience as a player: as soon as you kick the ball for the first time, the nerves disappear and you’re in the game. Then hopefully it will be a great 90 minutes.”
... on the role of games on a big stage like this:“I think they’re important in terms of pushing women’s football in Germany a little more. The fact that a game like this is getting so much attention is a significant step and shows great appreciation for women’s football. Within Borussia Dortmund, we don’t need to strengthen our role because we are a recognised department and an integral part of Borussia Dortmund.”
… on the importance of experienced players such as Rita Schumacher:“She can certainly tell us a lot about playing in matches like this and how to approach them. The girls always talk a lot to each other in the dressing room. I think they all support and encourage each other, and that's what makes for a good team performance.”
… on the big-name clash and the ambitions of the BVB women:“Our ambition is to play in the top division as soon as possible, and then the clash will be part of our routine in the league. This is now a little taste of Der Klassiker – in women’s football, that is. Although the level is very different, we want the match to take place at least twice a season at some point.”
... on the feedback about the upcoming match: “It’s unbelievable really. We invited all employees here and got a huge response, which of course makes us very happy. Hans-Joachim Watzke has announced he’ll be there, of course, and Carsten Cramer is always a big supporter. And then there’s a long list of people coming from other departments. A lot of people from the club are coming, as well as many media representatives. It’s crazy how much public interest the game is attracting. It’s going to be a colourful evening, and the stands will be very full.”
