Nico Schlotterbeck is apparently about to make a landmark decision at Borussia Dortmund. FC Bayern have also been linked with the central defender for a long time, but the dynamics in poker have changed noticeably of late.
The contract poker for Nico Schlotterbeck is on the home straight. According to consistent media reports, Borussia Dortmund is close to reaching an agreement with the international on an extension to his contract, which runs until 2027.
As reported by Sky, the club and the player have already reached an agreement on key points. A new contract until 2031 is planned, including a significant salary increase. In addition, an exit clause is to take effect from 2027. According to Bild, Schlotterbeck could earn up to EUR 14 million per year in the future.
While the talks are coming to a head, the field of interested parties has apparently narrowed considerably. According to Sky, two top clubs, Liverpool FC and Real Madrid, have now dropped out of the race.

The situation has also changed noticeably at FC Bayern. For months, Schlotterbeck was considered a potential candidate for the Munich defence – especially in the event that Dayot Upamecano did not extend his contract. However, speculation lost momentum after the Frenchman’s extension.
A look at the current squad situation underlines this development. With Jonathan Tah and Upamecano, the record champions have two established central defenders, with Minjae Kim and Hiroki Ito as further options behind them. Even if Kim were to leave, as has been repeatedly rumoured, Schlotterbeck’s prospects in Munich would not be clear. A regular place would by no means be guaranteed.
Nevertheless, the exit clause in question could remain interesting for FC Bayern in the long term. Particularly in view of the age structure – Jonathan Tah is already 30 years old – and the contractual situation of Dayot Upamecano, who also has an exit clause, a new situation could arise in the coming years.
In the middle of the ongoing contract talks, Dortmund’s new sporting director Ole Book also commented on the personnel issue: „Of course I’m involved. I’ve already written to Nico and we’ll talk soon. But after three and a half hours in office, I don’t want to comment in any more detail.“
