Seamus Coleman announces retirement, Everton farewell set for Sunderland match | OneFootball

Seamus Coleman will bid an emotional farewell to Everton supporters during Sunday’s home game with Sunderland after confirming he will end his playing career at the season’s close.

Sunderland travel to the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the second time this season. He told the club website he had decided this would be his final season as a player at Everton and he thanked fans for their unwavering support.

The 79-times capped Republic of Ireland international joined from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 for £60,000 and has made more than 370 appearances over 17 years.

This season he has featured only five times, with his sole Premier League start a 1-0 at Manchester United in November, and he suffered an injury 10 minutes into the game.

Despite limited involvement this term, Coleman remains held in high esteem by Everton supporters, and he said he has always tried to put the club first, lives in the city and has taken fans’ passion back into the dressing room.

Former Sunderland manager David Moyes said replacing what Coleman brings on and off the pitch will be incredibly difficult, praised his behind-the-scenes influence and respect across the club, and said he deserves a special place in Everton’s history and in the hearts of supporters.
