Leeds United’s relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a major setback, with Xavi Simons ruled out for the rest of the season after an ACL injury.

On Monday, the club said in a statement that the 23-year-old has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, then begin rehabilitation with their medical team.

Third-bottom Spurs earned a 1-0 win at Wolves at the weekend, yet stayed in the drop zone as West Ham also beat Everton.

Simons was forced off at Molineux with a knee problem. The Netherlands international had produced a goal and an assist in the previous weekend’s 2-2 draw against Brighton.

Tottenham also lost striker Dominic Solanke to a muscular issue, the forward substituted five minutes before the break.
