Widely shared videos show the Senegal and Uzbekistan squads subjected to intensive checks by United States customs officers on arrival, days before the World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July.

One clip shows Senegal midfielder Pathé Ciss of Rayo Vallecano seated on a chair on the tarmac as an officer scans him head to toe with a metal detector. The scene appeared to surprise members of the Senegal delegation, who are France’s first opponents in group I on Tuesday 16 July, nine pm in France. ESPN Centroamérica posted separate footage of Uzbekistan undergoing similar checks.

Players and staff from the Asian side were inspected one by one in the street after stepping off their bus at Icahn Stadium in New York.

They were told to empty their pockets and were searched with a metal detector, while a sniffer dog examined backpacks.

Uzbekistan, known as the White Wolves, begin their tournament on 18 June against Colombia at four am.
