The Senegalese government has called for an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within the Confederation of African Football leadership after its appeals jury stripped Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco. The government said in a statement that it rejects the move as an unjustified dispossession, describing it as exceptionally serious and grossly illegal. It added that Senegal will pursue all appropriate legal remedies, including before competent international jurisdictions, to restore the primacy of the sporting result.
Two months earlier, Senegal had won the final 1-0 after extra time on the pitch. During the match, their players briefly left the field in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco.
CAF subsequently declared Morocco champions by forfeit, 3-0, on the basis of incidents and protests during the game.
The ruling provoked an immediate reaction in Senegal on Tuesday evening.
Senegal had been due to present the trophy to supporters at the Stade de France on 28 March, ahead of a friendly against Peru.
