The Champions League produced one of those moments that was, and will continue to be, discussed all across the continent on Wednesday evening.

Moment of magic

With SL Benfica leading Real Madrid 3-2, the Portuguese side began to see out the match.

Nonetheless, they soon realised that they needed a two-goal cushion to advance in the final 24th league spot in the Champions League.

Jose Mourinho encouraged his goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, to go up for a free kick in the 98th minute of play.

The Ukrainian rose like a salmon and powered a centre-forward type header past Thibaut Courtois to give Benfica the 4-2 lead they needed to progress.

Mourinho celebrated wildly in front of the bench of his former employers, and the Champions League produced another iconic moment.

Senne Lammens

Manchester United have sadly not been involved in any European competition this year after last season’s disastrous 15th-place finish in the Premier League and loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Nonetheless, United’s impressive new goalkeeper has already had a moment like Trubin against Real Madrid, just in a significantly less high-profile situation.

The club’s official website reports, “our very own Senne Lammens also went viral with a headed equaliser against the Spanish giants in the UEFA Youth League, back in 2019.”

The article continues to explain, “then at Club Brugge, he came forward for a corner and rescued a point, by making it 2-2, to send the Belgian side through to the next stage, with a goal at the death.”

Lammens already caused confusion in the opposition box this season when he went up in the last minute in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in early November. He did not make contact with the ball, but he helped make space for Matthijs de Ligt, who headed home a last-gasp equaliser.

Speaking on the moment, he added, “so I like to believe I played, also, a small role in that one, the goal of Matthijs. So, yeah, hopefully, in the future, we’re not behind. But, if we are behind, I can help the team as well and maybe score a goal one time.”
