Sergio Romero, ex-Man United and Monaco keeper, retires aged 39

Sergio Romero has retired at 39, the Argentina international and 2014 World Cup finalist had been without a club. According to L'Équipe, his retirement was reported on Monday.
Romero began his career 20 years ago at Racing Avellaneda in Buenos Aires province. He moved to AZ Alkmaar, winning the Dutch title in 2009. He later joined Sampdoria and then Manchester United after a short loan at Monaco in 2013-2014, where he played only nine matches.
With United he won the Europa League in 2017. In total, he made 371 club appearances.
He won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and was first called up by Diego Maradona. Romero earned 96 caps and played at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. In Brazil he stood out in the semi-final shootout against the Netherlands, after a 0-0 draw, Argentina won 4-2 on penalties.
Led by Lionel Messi, Argentina then lost the final to Germany 1-0 after extra time. Selected by Jorge Sampaoli for the 2018 World Cup, Romero withdrew due to a knee injury.
He returned home in 2022 after a final European stint in Venice. He has since played for Boca Juniors, then Argentinos Juniors last year. Romero has hinted he could now be tempted by a coaching role.
