Title hopefuls Inter recorded a seventh consecutive Serie A victory in their latest outing against Fiorentina. Meanwhile, Lazio prevailed in a seven-goal thriller against relegation-threatened Genoa.
Here’s how the latest round of results unfolded in Italy’s top flight as Inter try to keep the pressure on league leaders Roma.
Inter continued their impressive run of form with a dominant display against Fiorentina. Lina Magull found the breakthrough in the closing stages of the first half, steering her precise header out of Cecilie Fiskerstrand’s reach. Forward Haley Bugeja added a second just after the hour mark, outmuscling her marker to latch onto a through ball and slide a composed shot into the bottom corner.
There was still plenty of time left in the contest for Elisa Polli to net her third Serie A goal of the season, and for Tessa Wullaert to fire wide from the penalty spot. While Wullaert would have been disappointed with the miss, Inter will be delighted with a third consecutive victory without conceding.
Lazio came from behind to establish a 3-1 lead in their thrilling away clash against Genoa. Emma Martín struck just before the 20-minute mark to cancel out Arianna Acuti’s opener. Clarisse Le Bihan and Martina Piemonte each grabbed a goal apiece to establish a two-goal cushion. However, Anastasia Ferrara quickly reduced the deficit with her first Serie A goal.
Unfortunately for the hosts, their hopes of a positive result were dashed in the second period. Eleonora Goldoni volleyed home with the aid of a deflection, before Piemonte towered high to glance her header in from Elisabetta Oliviero’s inswinging cross. Piemonte’s second wrapped up an impressive win that has left Lazio in fifth and four points adrift of the top three. As for Genoa, they are hovering above the dotted line following a seventh defeat in eight Serie A matches.
Roma were made to work for all three points in Sunday’s home meeting with AC Milan. The hosts were left frustrated after Evelyne Viens saw two goals ruled out for offside. However, Roma were handed a numerical advantage when Kayleigh van Doorsen was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Rinsola Babajide. The leaders quickly made full use of that red card, grabbing the all important winner through Valentina Bergamaschi. The 29-year-old steered the ball home after meeting Babajide’s knockdown from a deep cross.
Elsewhere, Juventus saw off Como via a 2-0 scoreline to record a fifth consecutive victory in all competitions. Como created a number of chances, but they ultimately lacked Juventus’ quality in the final third. Estela Carbonell broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, sending her effort looping over Astrid Gilardi with the aid of a deflection. Paulina Krumbiegel made sure of the three points in the closing stages, powering a header home from Lindsey Thomas’s cross.
Napoli made it three consecutive wins in a row with a commanding 3-1 success against Ternana. Francesca Quazzico’s own goal presented Napoli with a sixth-minute lead. The defender’s miserable first half was completed when she was sent off for a needless studs-up tackle. Alessia Carcassi added a second within four minutes of the restart, shortly before Katja Schroffenegger dropped the ball over the line in her attempt to deal with a corner. The only disappointment for Napoli was that they were denied a clean sheet by Giada Pellegrino’s fourth league goal of the season. The win keeps Napoli within three points of third-placed Juventus, while Ternana remain bottom of the table on goal difference.
Sassuolo’s home game with Parma looked set to end goalless until Davina Philtjens produced a stunning strike to win the game in the 81st minute. The-36-year-old let the ball run across her on the edge of the box before firing a left-footed strike out of Camelia Ceasar’s reach. The 1-0 success ended a run of three consecutive defeats, moving Sassuolo five points clear of the relegation zone. As for Parma, they are just two points above Ternana.
Piemonte is the outright leader in the Serie A scoring charts with 10 goals in 13 appearances. The Lazio striker has also scored over 50% of Lazio’s league goals this season.
Philtjens undoubtedly scored the best goal of the recent round of Serie A action. The long-serving Sassuolo player unleashed an unstoppable strike from the edge of the box – an effort worthy of snatching all three points.
Sassuolo 1-0 Parma
Genoa 2-5 Lazio
Como 0-2 Juventus
Roma 1-0 AC Milan
Napoli 3-1 Ternana
Inter 3-0 Fiorentina
