The Lega Serie A are taking steps to enhance the televisual experience of watching top-flight Italian matches, and for the first time in the league’s history, will utilise RefCam technology for the upcoming Derby d’Italia between Juventus and Inter.
The Lega Serie A have confirmed on Tuesday that Juventus-Inter will be the first game in the division’s history to make use of the new system, which allows supporters at home to see the game from the referee’s perspective.
The match official will wear a tiny camera, weighing around six grams, which will be attached at the bottom of their microphone headband.

The footage will be used during warm-ups, while showing the preparation for set-pieces including free-kicks and penalties, and will also be used to show replays of certain specific in-game incidents.
With the introduction of a new camera angle, the footage will also be available to VAR officials in the control room, the league have confirmed.
“Lega Calcio Serie A is preparing for another historic day in the evolution of television broadcasting of matches and technological innovation,” a statement on the Lega Serie A website read.

“During the Serie A Juventus-Inter big match, scheduled for Saturday 13 September at 6 p.m. at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, Refcam will make its debut in Italy. Refcam is an ultra-modern camera that allows viewers to watch the match from the privileged point of view of the referee.
“Lega Calcio Serie A is, in fact, one of the European professional leagues that has been selected to trial the use of Refcam in filming during official competitions, in accordance with the protocols drawn up by FIFA and IFAB, which have already been tested in the recent FIFA Club World Cup.
“The high-resolution micro-camera, weighing only 6 grams, will be mounted at the base of the referee’s microphone headband and will be used during the warm-up, live during the match, when preparing for free kicks and similar situations, or to show spectacular replays. As it is one of the cameras available to television production, it will be regularly delivered as an isolated signal to the VAR.”
