Several jersey numbers are yet to be finalised at Barcelona for next season | OneFootball

Jersey numbers are important in La Liga, and perhaps even more so at FC Barcelona. Many numbers hold iconic memories, and true greats of the sport have worn them at some point. However, there is a limited selection for certain players depending on certain factors.

Currently, there are a handful of Barça players without confirmed jersey numbers for next season, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo. The most obvious, and arguably most urgent, case remains that of new signing Joan Garcia.

A potential delay for Barcelona yet again

However, the options for jersey numbers are limited for first-team goalkeepers. Traditionally, and most commonly, they are supposed to wear from a selection that consists of the numbers ‘1’, ‘13’, or ‘25’. Unfortunately, all three are currently taken.

While Inaki Pena’s expected exit should leave the number ‘13’ vacant, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s surgery fiasco is also eating up precious time. Typically, finalised jersey numbers are clarified around the time of the Joan Gamper Trophy, but things could be delayed this time around.

Other players that still need their jersey numbers to be finalised are Marc Bernal, Gerard Martin, Hector Fort, and Roony Bardghji.

In the latter’s case, however, there is an expectation that he will end up succeeding Lamine Yamal as the club’s number ‘19’, considering that the 18-year-old Spanish superstar has already inherited the iconic number ‘10’.

As for Bernal, Martin, and Fort, the numbers ‘12’, ‘18’, and ‘22’ remain vacant. It remains to be seen what they end up being given, but it is important to note that summer signing Marcus Rashford has already been given the number ‘14’ jersey.

Either way, the Catalan club needs to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Ter Stegen’s refusal to cooperate with the club’s requests has already delayed a lot of processes this summer, and this could potentially be one of them as well.
